Oh catnip, vainglorious,
how you woo me
with your smell.
Your leaves,
thick, green,
they tempt me,
Calling me from duty --
lizard stalk,
mousehole guard --
To heed your siren call,
you Charybdis,
you Scylla,
green temptress of the garden --
will you drown me?
Cast me on your rocks?
Or will you raise me up, exulting?
I long for you,
sweet, sensuous plant:
in you I find salvation
my heaven,
my hell,
my kind nip.

My mom was a stray who had a litter in a friend's backyard. I was the smallest of the bunch and fell prey to a hideous flea infestation. When I was found, I was close to death, weak and frail, with matted fur and thousands of fleas ravaging my tiny frame. Luckily, they were able to save me, but thousands of kittens are not so lucky. Every year stray cats fall victim to dog attacks, disease, vehicle deaths, and starvation. We also wreak havoc on the natural songbird and small animal populations. None of this is necessary; there are things that you can do to stop the problem. Support your local no-kill shelters- they can always use donations of food, supplies and time. Most importantly, however, spay and neuter your pets and urge your friends and family to do the same! Myself, and thousands like me, will thank you!
